IEMT Stands for Integral Eye Movement Therapy and was developed by Andrew T. Austin on the original work by Connirae and Steve Andreas and has been taught internationally and is used in many countries around the world. The model is based on 5 patterns of chronicity of why clients stay stuck.
What is it?
IEMT is a change tool and model that allows the client to disassociate themselves from disturbing memories and update their identity to reduce negative emotions, allowing the client to free themselves and move forward from the past.
How does it work?
IEMT works on the memory imprints that are causing the emotion (i.e. how did we learn to feel this way?) IEMT is not a talking therapy, it's a model that allows the therapist to remain detached from the clients' story, which then doesn't allow the clients' present emotions to cave in or alter.
There are two different eye movements that are used, with slight variations depending on what you are working on, Emotions, Memory, or Identities and with the use of careful questioning techniques the uncomfortable reactions to memories, unhelpful beliefs and emotional imprints are disassociated. The client themselves can accurately measure and assess the changes that are taking place in real time.
When sessions are in a calm, safe and relaxed environment it prevents the previous overwhelm in the brain, allowing the brain to process the memories and change the emotional attachments freely. This in turn allows the client to step out of the old cycle and into a new way of being - a happier, healthier future.
IEMT often works on issues clients' have had for years and where other therapies and treatments have failed.
What does it work best on?
IEMT an effective therapy for anxiety, depression, emotional blocks, low self-esteem, limiting beliefs, phobias, unwanted habits and trauma.
PTSD - with this we work on the Lynchpin, this is the point when the incident happens, the most significant part.
PSAC - Physiological State Accessing Cues - with this we explore the relationship between negative states and body language. This is extremely effective and has great results within a short period.
What is the process, what can I expect?
IEMT uses a series of questions, labelling the memory and saying what the emotion might be. i.e. School, Embarrassed.
Once we have that, we ask you to follow our finger in either one of two patterns, depending on what we are working on.
We collaborate after the eye movement and assess the changes that are happening.
Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) is listed in the Sage Encyclopedia of Therapy in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
